What's Causing the Rise In Obesity? Everything. - Slashdot: "Sucrose is cleaved into fructose and glucose by enzymes in the saliva, but there is also an odd glitch in our metabolic pathways that tends to divert energy derived from free fructose directly into fat storage instead of converting it all to glucose. One theory is that since fruits ripen during the warm months and fruits often contain an abundance of fructose, that it once served as a trigger to start storing fat for Winter, but who knows. The problem boils down to more calories in than out, but it can make a difference how those calories are consumed."

What's Causing the Rise In Obesity? Everything. - Slashdot
What's Causing the Rise In Obesity? Everything. - Slashdot: "Problem with fructose is it is only processed in the liver. I am going off memory here, if you want a more in depth discussion from an expert google "Sugar the bitter truth" a video by an endocrinologist. So.... while only about 10% of the glucose that you ingest is processed in the liver, 90% of the fructose is.
The liver's process for dealing with these produces several products, which include both VLDLs (the worst kinds of cholesterol, far worst than you get from fat, which is mostly more boyent cholesterol...even not all LDLs are created equal) AND it produces hormones which supress appetite.
So sucrose is 50% fructose. If you use sucrose It splits 50-50 into glucose and fructose. 10% of the glucose and 90% of the fructose go to your liver... or about 55% of the total you ingested. If you use fructose, thats the full 90%.
Since it supresses appetite, you tend to eat more. A kid given a soda before a meal tends to eat more during the meal than a kid who doesn't."

Apple juice as sugary as Coca-Cola, experts warn
Apple juice as sugary as Coca-Cola, experts warn: "Apple juice has as much sugar as soft drinks, and health experts are warning consumers to limit consumption or risk gaining weight.
Often selected as the healthier option over soft drinks or energy drinks, apple juice is no more than a ''sugar syrup'', nutritionists say.
''It's just like drinking Cola-Cola, it's no different,'' Dietitians Association of Australia spokeswoman Kellie Bilinski said.
''That's the misconception that people think, 'oh it's good for me'. I would much prefer people drank water and ate the fruit.''"

Young people putting on weight
This article in SMH.com explains the danger to young people of todays fast food revolution. Diet and exercise solution
Australians in their 20s and 30s are gaining weight at an alarming rate, increasing their risk of developing diabetes and heart disease, a study has found.
The trend has renewed calls for a debate on tougher interventions to tackle the obesity epidemic, such as a tax on junk foods and more subsidies for fruit and vegetables.
The Australian Diabetes, Obesity and Lifestyle Study of 11,000 adults over 12 years found that, on average, people between 25 and 34 stacked on 6.7 kilograms during the period - more than any other age group.
For those between 35 and 44, the average weight gain was 4.7kg, followed by 2.7kg for people 45 to 54 and 0.4kg for those aged 55 to 64.

FOR those of us who would like to shed a few pounds, dietary advice usually boils down to brute arithmetic. Reduce energy input by eating less, and increase energy output by exercising more. Simple. Except that as anyone who has tried it knows, it isn't.
One reason is that our evolutionary history has given us a powerful drive to eat rich foods when they are available. Now that they are virtually ubiquitous, resisting temptation can be an endless losing battle.
But there's more to it than that. Treating food as simple units of energy – 100 calories in a chocolate-chip cookie, 1 calorie in a celery stick – may make diets easier to understand, but it is a recipe for failure. Food contains a lot more than just energy. It is stocked with powerful molecules that change how your metabolism works"

If there was ever a study not to lose sleep over, it's this one. People deprived of a good night's rest are more likely to experience changes in brain activity that can increase the urge to eat high-calorie foods.
Matthew Walker at the University of California in Berkeley and colleagues conducted the first study of brain activity in relation to food among sleep-deprived people. The team used fMRI to study brain patterns in 23 people, first after a night of peaceful sleep and then after a night without sleep."

Too little sleep? Craving some fatty food? Scientists prove they go together
New scientific papers are coming out almost daily about diet weight loss and exercise. The following article in today's Sydney Morning Herald explains the relationship between fat and sleep.
Too little sleep? Craving some fatty food? Scientists prove they go together: "Scientists have found evidence that a lack of sleep causes changes in brain activity that lead to people feeling hungrier and craving more fattening foods.
Researchers have long pointed to a correlation between a steep rise in obesity in industrialised nations and less sleep.
A causal link was suspected, but science has not been able to explain the mechanism, until now.
A University of California team used MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scans to spot changes in the brain activity of sleep-deprived test subjects.

''These findings provide an explanatory brain mechanism by which insufficient sleep may lead to the development/maintenance of obesity,'' they wrote in the journal Nature Communications."

Cereals, Dieting, Nutrition, Training and Weightloss
Cereal is, by and large, one of the worst foods for your waistline, and your health. There are of course a few rare exceptions (like some of the cereals in the Ezekiel 4:9® line from the good folks at Food for Life®) but when it comes to the "regular" boxes that stock the shelves of the cereal aisle at your local grocery store, it's generally all very, very bad news.
Perhaps what is most disturbing about so many brands of cereal is that they confuse the heck out of consumers by making them "sound" so healthy and nutritious, when in reality they are anything but.
For example, while at the grocery store today I came across a "Yogurt Berry Crunch" cereal (with added fiber!) from a popular brand.
It sure sounds healthy...
In fact, the label even makes claims like "heart healthy!" and points out that it contains "25 grams of whole grains". "Rich in antioxidants, vitamin C & E", too. Just add up all those health benefits!
But here's the truth:
This so-called "healthy" cereal contains FIFTY ONE ingredients, including not one, not two, not six, not seven, but TEN different sources of SUGAR

Primal Burn Paleo Fat Burn the Cave man Diet
Primal Burn Paleo Fat Burn. Eat your GREENS
Diets come and go but this one has been around since man started standing up and walking.
Protein, most commonly associated with meat, poultry, fish and egg sources, is essential for fueling our bodies.
But there are other natural sources that many herbivores are familiar with… and they’re green!
Having adequate amounts of protein in your diet is essential to sustaining your muscle health, among other important biological functions.
So whether you prefer not to include the more “traditional” animal proteins in your diet, or you are just seeking alternative ways to sneak in some extra protein, there’s another option you may not have considered.
In addition to providing vitamins, minerals, and other essential nutrients, green vegetables are also packed with protein!
This is probably why many believe “you either love them or hate them”.
But there are good reasons why you should really give Brussels Sprouts a try!
